What perks or other tangible benefits do you get?
I certainly meet a lot of people and engage a lot of people. I find that very rewarding.

Getting to where you are now

What critical choices did you make growing up that helped you get to where you are today?
I had a stick-to-it-ness – I started in the band at 5th grade and stuck through it into middle school even though at times I wanted to quit.

I also had trouble sticking with Spanish but now I am definitely proficient in it. Overall, the choice to continue to develop and learn has been critical.

After high school, what obstacles did you face and how did you overcome them?
I really de-valued the importance of education, and didn’t believe in my own academic ability. Today, I still face some societal challenges.

What or who inspired you to really go after the profession you are in now?
The director of my department in college, Bertha Maxwell. I respected her as a person because she was very strong, well spoken, and compassionate.

I also admired Associate Professor Greg Davis who was working on his doctorate while I was in school. He was blind and it never held him back.

What critical choices or decisions did you make that helped you get where you are today?
I always had a strong work ethic. I’m continuing to develop my belief in myself and my abilities. Going to college was a great experience.

What do you wish you had known then that you know now?
Hard work and dedication – a commitment will certainly help you accomplish your goals.
