Tell us about your job

How did you get your job?
I was at an ad agency and I was doing lots of fun things, but I always wanted to start my own business. My boss left and I left too.

What are the best and worst parts of your job?
Best – I get to draw a lot and see my work in public a lot. Worst – Occasional poverty.

What perks or other tangible benefits do you get?
I get to meet lots of people. I am able to do new stuff every day, and I am completely independent.

What [school] subjects do you use at work?
English (writing), art, math (accounting and keeping track of large numbers and percentages)

If you weren’t in your current profession, what would you be?
I’d want to be a librarian, I might also be a promoter. I would like to be a pattern designer too.

What do you do in your free time?
I like to read, travel, cook, go to music shows, make cartoons, and shop.

Getting to where you are now

Who inspired you growing up?
My mother because she is very independent and creative. All of her brothers are artists too. My poetry teacher because he was very no nonsense, had a really good heart and was very fair. Books were my way to see what I could be – I read like a maniac and still do.

What critical choices did you make growing up that helped you get to where you are today?
I worked hard in English. Took the AP English course. Had to write a lot of papers and haven’t written that many papers since. I liked learning how to write – even though I work in art, I write all the time. Playing on the computer – being able to think with the computer.

After high school, what obstacles did you face and how did you overcome them?
I was scared and insecure in the early years of art school. I was a country girl coming to a big city and was scared that I wouldn’t measure up or make a living. I overcame these obstacles by working hard and with help of friends. Another obstacle was that I didn’t have a lot of money.

What or who inspired you to really go after the profession you are in now?

My mother, and Andy at no|inc. Andy started his business 6 months before I did and I admired that. It gave me the idea to start my own business.

What critical choices or decisions did you make that helped you get where you are today?
I learned how to make art on the computer and how to spend time with individuals I could learn from. Before I started my business, I started doing my work after hours to see if I could handle my own business.

What do you wish you had known then that you know now?
Calm down – it’s important to just calm down, not to be panicked about small things at work.
