I am a cosmetologist. I also OWN the business itself.
It is my job to make people look and feel better about themselves.
Running the business takes several key skills. You have to be a good communicator ... which starts in school with English and writing. You also have to be a problem-solver ... these skills actually develop in school as well, particularly in math and science.
Why do I do my job?
Well-being is an important part of society.
I like creating the best look for a person.
I like making people feel better when I give them special treatment.
6:30 AM:
I've already been at work for a 1/2 hour. Mine is a service industry, so I want to be available for people before work.
9:00 AM:
I'm performing services for my clients.
1:00 PM:
Most people are working in the middle of the day during the week so this is the time I take a break.
4:00 PM:
Performing more services for clients
7:00 PM:
Finishing up the last clients of the day and then home.
What obstacles did you face growing up and how did you overcome them?
My father died when I was 5 years old leaving my mother to raise 4 boys by herself. We were poor and my mother worked full time which left little time for us when she got home. I had to learn basic household chores to take care of myself. I was not a good student and compensated by being the class clown. When I was 10 years old a man who owned an office building gave me the job of cutting the lawn and cleaning offices. It made me value the work ethic that my mom instilled in us.
What or who inspired you growing up?
Definitely my mother. This was a woman with limited education and resources, but she managed to raise 4 boys and had the respect of everyone who knew her.
What critical choices did you make growing up that helped you get to where you are today?
I think going to work at Giant Food was a critical choice in my life. This job allowed me to make a good living and I met people who were going in the right direction. This is where I met my wife who I have been married to for 29 years.
