"If you want it, you can make it happen."
Nicole D.
College Student
CCBC
I'm a college student ... at the Community College of Baltimore County . I'm majoring in aviation.
Aside from school, I have a part time job working at a small airport.
I hope to be a corporate pilot one day, so then I'll be flying my customers in a small jet wherever they want to go.
All I have to worry about is the flying!
Check out the latest news about CCBC's Aviation program!
Besides my love of flying and being in the air...
At the airport, I give tours of the hangar, as well as show visitors the planes. I like giving back that learning experience to people who are interested.
I schedule people for flying lessons -- this is also a little flying school. It exciting to be around others interested in the same field as I am.
The job at the airport gives me vital on-site experience. CCBC is a place where I can learn as much as I can, apply my knowledge at my job, to reach my goals.
6:30 AM
I'm still asleep.
9:00 AM
Getting dressed for work and making sure my uniform is in order.
1:00 PM
I'm at the airport, and at this time, we're usually pretty busy with people taking flight courses.
4:00 PM
We have a lot of people who are renting our planes to fly cross-country come in around this time of day.
7:00 PM
I'm just getting home to start my CCBC homework!
What or who inspired you growing up?
My teachers always inspired me because they had such a wealth of knowledge from their experiences. What inspires me now is the drive to obtain that wealth of knowledge.
What obstacles did you face growing up and how did you overcome them?
I am still growing up! The obstacles I face are balancing work, school, and play. I constantly have to focus and center myself with what is important at the time. Education is first -- it's only free for the first 12 years; second is work and chores; and play is for the time left over.
What do you wish you'd known then that you know now about high school?
In high school I really wish I had known that what other people think of you is unimportant, especially when you are trying to figure out a math problem or trying out for sports.

Tell Us About Your Job
How did you get your job?
I took lessons here, and I asked the airport staff for months to hire me. Finally, they did!
What are the best and worst parts about your job?
The best is meeting all the pilots, especially those who flew past wars and who have great stories to tell. The worst is when it's rainy out and no one is flying, so there's not much to do.
What perks or other tangible benefits do you get?
The benefit for me is just being around airplanes.
What [school] subjects do you use at work?
Math, keyboarding, computer classes.
If you weren't in your current profession, where would you be?
Probably being an environmental scientist. (like Jack, his science involves the air pollution and satellites for NASA)
What did you want to be when you grew up?
An environmental scientist who saved rainforests.
